Some questions are scary to ask…
Here are some frequently asked questions/concerns you may have for your therapist, but don’t want to personally ask.
-
Relapse is part of many clients’ journeys. Because you resonated with this question and the word “relapse”, I suspect you have a goal of sobriety/abstinence and that whatever occurred did not align with your goals. We will explore what occurred and make a plan for moving back towards your goals.
If you aren’t sure that sobriety is your goal anymore, please let me know so that we can talk about a harm reduction goal. -
No. I do not require my clients to take psychiatric medication. I am a counselor and not a psychiatrist. During our time together, I will be honest with you if I believe that medication could help and will offer a referral to a psychiatrist in these instances. The decision to accept a referral and pursue medication in addition to talk therapy is your choice.

Relationships and vulnerability are scary. I’m proud of you for considering sharing your deeper thoughts.
When you are ready- I’m here. I am here to listen and process through your thoughts, impulses, and memories with you without judgement.
Yes- I am a mandated reporter. We will work through this together. Many secrets shared in therapy don’t require reporting, but yes some do. If you have any questions about what would require a mandated report, just ask. You can always ask questions and gather information.

Of course. I honestly care about my clients!
I learn so much about you and your story, that I certainly am triggered to think of you at moments or even on certain days/occasions. This can happen even after we’ve concluded our counseling work together.
I have learned to separate my work and home life. This allows me to leave most of my thoughts at work and gives me time to fully recharge with my own family, but, of course, my clients pop into my mind. And I love that =)

I’m sorry to hear that our time together isn’t meeting your expectations or current goals.
You don’t have to worry about sharing this with me; no one is for everyone. If you are ready to end sessions, just let me know and we will terminate. If there is something I can do better to support you, please let me know. I am always open to feedback. Your sessions should work for you. -
HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 both protect your information and confidentiality. Your name, identifying information, and SUD diagnosis cannot be shared without your written consent except with a direct court order.
Exceptions exist in instances where disclosure is necessary to protect yourself or others from imminent and foreseeable harm.
You have the right to access to your treatment records except in the case that access to such records would cause harm to yourself.
If you have active legal involvement or a PO it is possible that they may want documentation from me. I would love to provide this documentation with your consent in order to keep you in good standing. That being said, unless you give your consent, 42 CFR Part 2 protects you, and I would be unable to do so without a court order.
